OVERVIEW OF CATHOLIC JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMISSION

Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (CJPC) was formed in 1988:

  • As an executive arm of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) on matters of peace and justice.
  • An arm of the Catholic Church mandated to promote justice and peace
  • Challenge oppressive structures in society. 

What does CJPC Mean?

C- Catholic  – Means Universal church

J Justice – Fairness in the way people are treated/ being just/ equitableness, moral rightness

P- Peace: Peace literally means freedom from disturbance. It means a state of tranquility, calmness, absence of war. According to Harrison Ford, “Peace is not the absence of war but the presence of justice”

C- Commission – A commission is a group of people entrusted by the government, church or other official body with the authority to do something or a specific assignment.

MANDATE OF CJPC IN RUARAKA DEANERY

The broad mandate of CJPC is to awaken people, communities and the whole nation on issues pertaining to development, human advancement, Justice, peace, human rights and reconciliation.

CJPC Action Plan

Ruaraka Deanery CJPC Leadership like other deaneries in the Archdioceses of Nairobi remains committed to ensure that we:

—Establish CJPC throughout all the parishes, Outstations and Small Christian Communities.

—Promote the process of dialogue as a means of conflict resolution.

—To promote peacebuilding initiatives within the small Christian communities so as to achieve sustainable peace in our communities.
